Made in England by Berkeley Chess. Heavily weighted, these BROWN crushed marble and resin characters are very high quality, with the detail highlighted in skillful staining. Based on an ancient German chess set. Similar to the Isle of Lewis. The back of the Kings throne is warriors. The back of the Queens throne is Ladies in Waiting. The back of the Bishops throne is religious men and musicians. The Rook shows the beginnings of the introduction of the castle into early European chess. For us, the detail on the back of the chairs set this design apart.
